Piperacillin Sodium & Tazobactam Injection: Piperacillin + Tazobactam is categorized under the class of drugs ‘Antibiotics’ and is mainly prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections. It is prescribed for the treatment of several hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonias, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, skin and soft tissue infections (such as diabetic foot infection) and uterine infections. Bacterial infection develops when pathogenic bacteria develop in the body and lead to disease. It may affect any location in the body and grows very rapidly.
Piperacillin + Tazobactam consists of two drugs, i.e., Piperacillin and Tazobactam. Piperacillin is a member of the class ‘Penicillin antibiotics.’ Piperacillin has bactericidal activity against gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Piperacillin inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) within the bacterial cell wall and preventing its cell wall synthesis. Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Tazobactam inhibits the degradation of other antibiotics by beta-lactamase enzyme-producing organisms. In Piperacillin + Tazobactam, Tazobactam is effective by inhibiting the bacteria from degrading Piperacillin.
Medical Benefits:
- Piperacillin is a Penicillin antibiotic. It inhibits by binding to the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) within the bacterial cell wall and stopping its cell wall synthesis.
- Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that inhibits the degradation of other antibiotics by beta-lactamase enzyme-producing bacteria.
- In Piperacillin + Tazobactam, Tazobactam acts by inhibiting the bacteria from degrading Piperacillin.
- Therefore, Piperacillin + Tazobactam is useful in treating several bacterial infections of the stomach, lungs, skin and uterus.
Uses:
- Piperacillin + Tazobactam is used to treat severe intra-abdominal infections by acting on the bacteria causing them.

- Piperacillin + Tazobactam is used to treat complicated skin and soft tissue infections, such as those due to surgical wounds, bites, or diabetic foot infections.
- Piperacillin + Tazobactam is also beneficial in the treatment of urinary tract infections, which can help destroy the bacteria that lead to the infection.
- Piperacillin + Tazobactam is utilized to treat serious infections among women, such as pelvic inflammatory disease and endometritis, by destroying a wide spectrum of bacteria.
